Ultraleve

Paweł Althamer

Utraleve (2011) – an installation by Paweł Althamer, invading the public space of the city of Brasilia. The Brazilian capital, built „on raw root” in deep interior, was a materialisation of the modernist utopia of an ideal city. The plan of settlement was designed by Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in the shape of an airplane. Paweł Althamer’s project directly refers to this form, at the same time alluding to Poland’s political reality. The artist placed a checker-board of Polish national colors on one of Brasilia’s “wings”. The two seemingly distant territories were drawn together by the presence of Polish embassy employees stationed in Brasilia and invited by Paweł Althamer to participate in the production of the piece.
