Maria Loboda in dOCUMENTA (13)

Maria Loboda's work for dOCUMENTA (13) is a "moving forest", composed of more than a dozen identical cypress trees. During the exhition, the trees move throughout the Karlsauepark, Kassel, landscape, proceding from its border and "marching" all the way to the baroque orangerie located at the opposite end of the park. Their battle formation was developed in cooperation with a military strategist as a reference to the Roman treaty De re militari. The sculpture was inspired by Birnam forest from the prophecy of the three witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth.
